HSC traces its beginnings to the medical era in California and formally dates its founding to 2001 under founder Nathaniel “Nat” Pennington. The company became widely recognized for organizing very large, collaborative phenotype hunts with partner farms, branded as the “World’s Largest Phenotype Hunt” beginning in 2018, which fed new releases and improvements to existing lines. Over the 2010s–2020s, HSC’s work expanded internationally while keeping its selection and trialing anchored in Northern California. Notable modern milestones include the growth of a substantial phenotype database generated through these hunts and the formalization of autos in new markets. Flagship releases such as Blueberry Muffin helped define the brand’s terpene-forward, production-ready profile.
