Summary
- A seed pack contains genetics/lineage, indica/sativa ratio, flowering time, yield, THC/CBD %, effect, and seed type, all of which affect your grow.
- The most important info is the genetics/lineage: it tells you the parents and gives you a preview of behaviour and effect.
- THC percentages are often inflated, measured from the best phenotype in ideal conditions. Focus on breeder reputation instead.
- Yield figures assume expert conditions. Expect 60–80% of stated yield on your first few grows.
- Always check the breeder name. A famous strain name means nothing if the genetics come from an unknown source.
A Seed Pack Is a Contract
When a reputable breeder puts information on a seed pack, they are making promises. Flowering time, yield, effect, genetics, these are not just marketing words. If you know how to read them, you can predict your grow before the seed ever touches soil.
1.The Genetics / Lineage
The most important information on the pack. ‘OG Kush x Gelato’ tells you the two parents and whether you are buying an F1 (first-generation cross), F2 (second generation, more variable), or a backcross (BX, crossed back to a parent for stability).
What to look for: Transparency. A breeder who lists their full genetic lineage is confident in their work. Be skeptical of packs that only give a fancy name with no parentage listed.
2. Indica / Sativa Ratio
Indica-dominant: shorter, bushier plants, faster flowering, denser buds.
Sativa-dominant: taller, longer flowering, more open bud structure.
This ratio tells you more about plant structure and growth pattern than about effect — which is shaped by terpenes and cannabinoids.
3. Flowering Time
Usually expressed as a range: ‘8-10 weeks’ for photoperiods, or ‘from seed to harvest in 70-80 days’ for autos. These numbers assume optimal conditions. Add 1-3 weeks for real-world variation and take the upper end as your baseline.
4. Yield Information
Expressed as grams per m² (indoor) or per plant (outdoor). Reality check: pack yields assume a dialled-in setup and experienced grower. As a home grower, expect 60–80% of stated yield for your first several grows.
5. THC / CBD Percentages
These numbers are often subject to inflation. A pack claiming ‘30% THC’ reflects the very best phenotype in ideal conditions. What matters more: terpene profile and breeder reputation. A well-grown 18% THC strain from quality genetics will outperform a stressed 25% plant from questionable stock every time.
6. Effect Description
Terms like ‘euphoric’, ‘relaxing’, or ‘sedative’ reflect the intended terpene and cannabinoid profile. Useful for deciding daytime vs evening use, social vs solo.
7. The Breeder Name
Always check who made the seed. At Jonny Seeds’, we only list seeds from breeders we verify, with full credit, original packaging, and clear lineage. No white-label, no ghost brands.
